Does an Old Crown or Filling Suddenly Feel Different?
You probably don’t think much about an older crown or filling when it is doing its job. In fact, that is exactly what we want. So, when a tooth that has felt perfectly normal for years suddenly catches your attention, it is worth listening.
Maybe your crown feels slightly different when you bite. Your tongue keeps finding a rough edge on a filling. Floss catches somewhere it never did before, or a tooth suddenly becomes sensitive to hot or cold. These changes don’t automatically mean something is seriously wrong, but they can signal that it’s time for a closer look.
Why Can Older Dental Work Change?
Crowns and fillings work hard. They experience biting and chewing forces every day, and both the restoration and the natural tooth supporting it can change over time. A filling may gradually wear or develop a small chip. A crown can become damaged or develop problems around its edges. New decay can also develop around an existing restoration.
The important thing to remember is that age alone does not tell us whether dental work needs to be replaced. An older crown or filling that remains stable and continues protecting the tooth may still be doing its job perfectly well.
Should You Wait and See?
If something feels noticeably different, we would rather you tell us about it now than wait until your next appointment. Small changes are easier to address before they become bigger ones. An examination lets us look at the restoration, the tooth underneath or around it, and your bite to determine what is really happening.
We take a conservative approach to treatment, which means we don’t replace dental work simply because it is old. If your restoration is still healthy and functional, we can continue monitoring it.
What If the Restoration Needs Attention?
The next step depends on what we find. We may replace a worn or damaged filling with a new tooth-colored one. If a tooth has lost more structure or needs additional protection, a crown may be the better solution. Our goal is to recommend the treatment that appropriately protects your tooth while preserving your oral health for the future. That is why noticing a change early can be helpful. It gives us an opportunity to evaluate the tooth and discuss your options before deciding what, if anything, needs to be done.
You Know What’s Normal for You
You live with your teeth every day, so you may notice a subtle change before anyone else does. You don’t need to diagnose the problem yourself, but please let us know that something feels different.
If an older crown or filling has started feeling unusual, schedule an appointment with our office located in Walnut Grove, CA. We’ll take a closer look, explain what we find, and determine whether your restoration needs attention.
